The Espresso Machine Behind Preamble Coffee
One of the biggest milestones so far in building Preamble Coffee has been purchasing the espresso machine that will eventually power the cart itself: a used La Marzocco Linea Mini R. This machine has become something of a standard in the specialty coffee world for good reason — commercial-grade performance, beautiful design, and long-term reliability in a compact footprint. While buying one brand new can be a major investment, I was fortunate to find an incredible local deal on a lightly used machine that had been exceptionally cared for.
One of the things that gave me confidence in the purchase was the machine’s history. The previous owner had actually worked for La Marzocco in quality assurance, and the machine itself had very low usage. To be safe, I also had it fully inspected by a local espresso machine technician before committing to it. Internally and externally, everything checked out beautifully. It’s still amazing to me how much care and engineering goes into machines like this — from the shot timer and dual-boiler setup to the walnut accents and accessory kit that came with it.
At this stage, the machine is serving as both a learning tool and the foundation for the future business. Since I’m still developing my skills as a barista, I paired the Linea Mini R with a more affordable home grinder setup while I continue planning the larger mobile cart buildout. There’s still a long road ahead — carts, health department approvals, workflow, events, and everything else that comes with starting a coffee business — but this machine feels like the beginning of something very real. I’m excited to continue sharing the process as things move forward.
